Be careful out there!

With the surge in unemployment, comes the surge of the bottom feeders that look to prey on the unsuspecting and desperate.

When conducting a job search, be very careful about signing up with "job boards" that require information such as social security numbers, mother's maiden names, etc.  This type of information can be used to steal your identity.  There are some VERY REPUTABLE sites to use such as LinkedIn, Indeed and SimplyHired.com.  Depending on your salary requirements, check out 6figures.com or TheLadders.com for those needing compensation above $70K.

Be leary of emails that offer positions for which you did not apply, or that immediately schedule an interview without any SPECIFIC company information.  These "interviews" are usually lures to get you to buy recruiting and marketing services. These are scams...unless you wish to hire a headhunter, recruiters generally charge the company, not the candidate. These scams are very sophisticated.  They rent nice offices and offer books and shiny brochures, but they are fake.  Outside of a subscription to a specific and reputable search site, you don't have to pay to find a job.

Here are some tips to finding resources:

When opening a post for a job you like or are remotely qualified for, look to see if they are using a particular search firm to post the job (i.e., ExecuSearch), then go to that website and register directly (in addition to applying for the job);

Go to the websites of associations that service the industry you are trying to enter and see if they have a job board.  If not, appeal to the Membership Director for either a member directory or at least some direction as to who you might target;

Sites like Glassdoor.com have very interesting information on companies that provide insight into the culture of the company and not just the "pretty job posting".  Check out their job board and keep an eye out on the ratings from employees.  You might even "LinkIn" with a couple to get a complete picture of a company before you apply for a position.

So good luck in the New Year finding your perfect job (and for those who remember the TV show)..Be Careful Out There!

Most blogs have a central theme...career advice, hobbies, fashion, etc.  This is not that kind of blog.  Nope.  This blog has far less content and seeks to serve a much greater audience.
This blog is meant to offer advice on the obscure, the usual and the mundane.  There are no specific topics, and this blog is not meant to be taken as expert advice.  It is simply meant to be a fun and informative page, and maybe a resource for someone anticipating being on a game show!
Topics that may be covered in upcoming blogs include:
  • How to file for bankruptcy
  • How does someone switch phone upgrades without interruption in service
  • What is the difference between a CV and a resume?
Anyway, hope you are entertained, and maybe even informed.  Ideas are welcomed!

So now you know!
